How to store and handle aluminum extrusions

In industrial manufacturing, aluminum extrusions dominate as versatile building blocks. In order to maintain their original condition and ensure optimum performance, correct storage and handling methods are essential.

Preventing corrosion and oxidation

Aluminum is naturally resistant to corrosion, a testament to its durability. However, improper storage and handling can damage this protective layer and lead to premature degradation. Profiles must be stored in dry, well-ventilated areas to minimize contact with moisture, acids and alkalis. Wrapping the profile in moisture-proof film or moisture-proof paper can further reduce the risk.

Handle with care

Aluminum profiles can be easily scratched or dented if not handled properly. Always wear gloves and use appropriate lifting equipment during transportation and installation to avoid damage. Avoid dragging the profile over rough surfaces and carefully inspect for any signs of damage before use.

Prevent bending or twisting

Improper storage or exposure to excessive force can cause profiles to bend or warp. Always store them on a flat surface and support them along their entire length. Avoid stacking profiles too high, as the weight creates pressure points that cause deformation.

Manage temperature fluctuations

Aluminum profiles expand and contract with temperature changes. Storing them in a stable temperature environment helps prevent stress and warping. If temperature fluctuations are unavoidable, adjust the temperature gradually to minimize the impact on the profile.

Optimize space and access

Maximize storage space with vertical shelving or racking. Clearly label each shelf or container for easy retrieval of specific materials. For large quantities, consider using metal shelving or pallets to prevent damage during handling.
